Autism and sleep.
My 2 year old son is on the spectrum. The main ways it manifests in him are being antisocial and not being able to sleep.
His doctor has recently put him on melatonin. He started on 1 mg, then was upped to 2. And has even had to go to 3 if his sleep was worse the night before.
He is up from 11-3 every night screaming and gets up for good at 6. I have a 4 month old baby, so the lack of sleep is hard. And he is waking up my 3 year old, who sleeps in the same room.
He sleeps in his own bed in a room with my 3 year old son. They eat at 6:30, have baths at 7, lotion and massages after the bath, takes his melatonin, I read them two books each, then are asleep around 8 or 8:30.
The melatonin has helped him get to sleep at night (it used to take him hours), but it has done nothing for keeping him asleep. Calming him down is nigh on impossible because he hates hugs, kisses, and being held. He has a glow worm that plays music and that helps when he turns it on during wake ups.
He can't sleep with any lights, including a night light. Won't sleep with a shirt on. And won't sleep under any blankets, though he will snuggle with his security blanket. He isn't speaking yet and doesn't understand much of what I say.
My husband works 7 nights a week and can't help me with any of them.
Right now, he isn't in therapy. He didn't do well with virtual therapy and with a 4 month old baby in the house (and living in an area where Covid is extremely high), I am not comfortable with a therapist being here who is also going to homes where people may have Covid.
His doctor has no advice for me besides giving him melatonin, which as helped him to go sleep, but not stay asleep.
Has anyone here experienced and conquered sleep issues with a 2 year old who is on the spectrum?
