What is stealing?
Okay so I got into a conversation with someone on the definition of stealing
I guess the actual definition says something along the lines of “taking something without permission with the intent of not returning”
So I’m curious what you would consider the following two scenarios
1. A woman asks to borrow her friends car. The friend gives permission for the woman to use the car. The woman takes the car and never returns it.
Is the car stolen considering she had permission?
2. A woman finds a pair of keys in the parking lot. She presses the horn button to see what car it belongs to. She then takes the car and drives it around. The owner of the car comes out to the parking lot to find her car and keys missing. The woman is gone for hours, but comes back and parks the car and goes home.
Would that be considered stealing even tho she brought the car back ?
I ask these questions out of curiosity of what people actually think
I had a situation in school where someone took a library book from me without permission and would not give it back. I told the teacher that the kid “stole” my book, and he told me the book was not stolen because I knew who took it and did not help me get it back.
I personally think stealing is stealing whenever someone takes something without permission, whether you know the person or not.
I just think the context of what and why something was taken shines light on how bad the situation actually is
