Anybody crib train a 1 year old?

Since my son was 2 months old, he shared the bed with me. It was the only way I could survive without my mom who had to fly back home, 9 hours away from where I am living now with my husband.

But now, my son is (almost) 1 years old and he’s too big to share our bed. At his mental age, how would you guys with experience recommend sleep training a child like him? He’s a persistent little man who is very head strong and stubborn. I’ve heard him cry for 40 minutes with no sign of stopping the last time I tried to train him. I did a sort of revised version of the CIO method. I’m not a fan of just letting him cry until he is too weak to keep going.
