Hospitals are full, anyone else scared?

Anyone else live in Southern California and scared to give birth at the hospital? The recent news is reporting that all the local hospitals in the area are packed, and rationing care due to all the covid patients. Im due March 3rd, but I’m scared he’s gonna be here sooner. Has anyone known of anyone who recently gave birth who can possibly share their birth stories during a time like these?

FTM and we live in Southern Ca too, I’m about 70 miles north of LA. Super nervous about giving birth in the hospital where they’re treating COVID patients but they probably have to keep a tight watch on the L&D department. I’m trying not to stress over it bc there’s not much you can do to change the situation 😩 I’m due 3/29 so hopefully within the next 90 days we will see some type of improvement.

Hospitals cannot turn you away if you are in active labor. Although your experience might not be what you always imagined, you will be able to give birth in a hospital no matter when you go into labor. Hopefully by your due date numbers will be back down so it won’t be as scary. I’m due in April and also very worried. I hope this eases your fears a bit ❤️

I’m due March 3rd as well! Do you have the option to birth at a birth center or have a home birth in California? If so, I would look into those options. I try to avoid the hospital when giving birth, due to hospital birth statistics, not covid.

I’m in Sacramento. The L&D wing of hospitals is separate than the intensive care units that COVID patients would be admitted in and I’m sure this is consistent throughout the country. Just like someone recovering from gallbladder surgery wouldn’t be in the room next to you. In Sacramento all of the COVID wings are full so they are rationing care but that doesn’t impact the L&D wing. 
Im hoping we will see some improvement by March. Thanksgiving started the surge then Newsom put us back in the stay at home order. We will probably see another surge in January after the holidays but it should taper back down by March. We will still likely have to wear masks and have just 1 support person but there shouldn’t be as many people with COVID admitted as there are right now!

No hospital will make a pregnant women in active labor go home or find a different hospital so I wouldn’t worry too much about that. If you have any concerns though you should talk to your OB since they’re very familiar with what the hospital situation is like.

Here in New York we had it pretty bad in April and I heard some horror stories about moms being shipped to other locations and being in one room with a bunch of other moms for 24 hrs before being discarded. No dads allowed during that time either. I think hospitals have learned out of their mistakes. They don’t even suggest to separate mom and baby anymore if mom tests positive for covid. I hope that by the time March comes around the numbers will be lower again. We will see a spike now after the holidays and then people hopefully come to their senses and stop meeting up in large groups.

I’m not too worried, my obgyn’s office is in the hospital so I already go there for all my appointments, they do a really thorough screening for well patients and everything is very separate. Masks are required everywhere. Also the birthing center there is very high security, and they said once checked in no one is allowed back out of L&D until they’ve been discharged, not even partners, so no one is going to be like wandering around to other parts of the hospital and getting exposed while we’re there.
