Keep in mind that I have AppleCare+ for my phone so I believe it should cover a majority of the repair expenses should I pursue that route
Or would it make more sense to upgrade to an iPhone X or XR?

get your screen fixed. since you have ac+ repairs are WAY cheaper. it'll likely be considered accidental damage so if the front display is broken, a repair will be $29. for the back display, it'll be $99. still significantly cheaper than upgrading. the xr is still a good phone anyways.

Most upgrades these days want you to turn in your old phone-which needs to have a fixed screen. So if you have to do that to upgrade and your phone works other then the screen I would just get it fixed.
