What do you consider an alcoholic ?

I think my SO is an alcoholic. Has anyone had experience with an alcoholic ? Looking for advice or stories to see if I’m overreacting.

Someone who needs it to function. Or they use it as a clutch.

Not my SO but a majority of my paternal family members had addiction issues. 
I would consider someone an alcoholic if they start to feel they “need” it, struggle to go without it, or show a lot of anxiety when they can’t drink

I don’t drink at all anymore and I haven’t drank in over a year and a half but I would’ve considered myself an alcoholic before that. I never drank at work and didn’t get withdraws without it but I drank 3-4 beers every single evening after work (didn’t get drunk) and would drink throughout the day on the weekends. It took a lot to get me drunk so I never really got drunk I just liked the buzz. I also couldnt go to social outings or anything without a buzz and got a DUI in college. That to me is a functioning alcoholic

My SO is an alcoholic. He calls into work at least 3-4 times a month under the guise of personal health days  it then starts buying shots at like 10 in the morning. He's usually hit the liquor store before he gets home from work. I've even heard him drinking on his lunch. He drinks probably close to 3/4 to a full pint by the end of the day. I have to pretend like it doesn't bother me most days because if I let it trigger me, he explodes and throws a tantrum. The last time I said something about it, he got pulled over trying to leave out family. Got extremely lucky, only getting one ticket and has honestly been slightly better since.

It can present in multiple ways. My FIL is a binge alcoholic. He will drink for days straight, ignoring all responsibilities and drink and drink and drink. Then he pulls the whole “I’m getting sober” then 2-3 months later, he does it again. 
My aunt is a functioning alcoholic. She drinks everyday to stay “normal.” You’d honestly never know she was an alcoholic until you saw her start to sober up. She becomes angry, paranoid, combative, etc. and then when she drinks again she becomes “normal” and functional.

My dad is an Alcoholic, he drinks a half a gallon of vodka every day. From the time he wakes up from the time he goes to bed he’s drinking vodka or beer. When he’s eating something, he doesn’t drink water or soda, it’s normally a beer. If he doesn’t drink he gets withdrawals. Normally you have to pour him some shots to get the shaking to stop. I’m 21 and I’ve never seen him without hard alcohol or a beer in his hand. They are super dependent on alcohol. If they use the excuse “it makes me calm down or feel better” often, they are alcoholics!
