Smokers and Newborns?

Hi, so i’m a first time teen mom due to have my baby in June.. Ideally me and my partner wanted to get our own place before we had the baby but at this point i don’t think it’ll be realistic so i’m planning to stay with my parents until the baby is atleast 3 months old.. the only thing is both my parents smoke? they don’t smoke inside the house but sometimes the scent lingers throughout, we have an upstairs/downstairs house, & mine & the babies main room will be upstairs & they smoke outside downstairs.. 
My concern is, is there anyway this can effect the baby? (neither myself or my partner smoke)

Yes. Smoke residue clings to clothing, furniture, the carpet and so on. I would be working on getting out of there ASAP. I won’t allow anyone to smoke anywhere near me now (only 19 weeks), and I wouldn’t allow a smoker to hold my baby without fully changing clothes and cleaning up once he’s born.

It would be the same as second hand smoke exposure, generally.. The smell is going to be on things in the house and certainly your parents themselves (one of my parents smoked growing up and also went outside).

It can yes , it’s not ideal but as long as they keep it outside and maybe ask them to wash their hands and change their clothes before coming by the baby . Also air purifiers are supposed to help with that . You can always get one and put it in your room to help with the smoke and smell . My Husband is trying to quit himself and I already told him if he is still smoking when our baby is here I want him to wash his hands and change his clothes before touching the baby . He agrees but doesn’t want to have to do that so he’s trying to stop . I agree with the first poster to not try and rush into leaving and get yourself into something not so great but to keep working towards it . I’m sure your parents will respect your wishes and concerns! And make sure the windows are closed when they do smoke so it doesn’t travel inside as much .

It’s not ideal to have your baby anywhere near cigarette smoke. However, I do think it’s very helpful they don’t smoke indoors. Do you notice a smoke smell on them? The bottom line is that it’s more important for you and your baby to have a safe place to stay and if being with your parents is that safe place, your baby will be fine. Just continue working toward your goal of getting your own place, but don’t rush into a bad situation just to get away from the cigarette smoke.
