Day 2: Black History Month
Day 2: Okay so we know that white people have a history of stealing things black people do as far as inventions, culture, and ideas and putting their name on it without giving proper credit we've all seen it before and this is one of those stories. Let's meet Onesimus. He was an African slave brought by Cotton Mather and he was taken to Boston during the smallpox outbreak in the 1700s.When asked by his owner, do you have smallpox Onesimus answered yes and no then proceeded to tell him about a practice him and his people did in Africa that involves taking a person with smallpox and cutting a piece of your arm and putting the pus of someone with smallpox so if someone were to get smallpox and survive they were immune for life. The process of inoculation was already being done in Africa, Asia, and Turkey way before it reached america. People described the process of inoculation a "heathen practice" from Africa nobody wanted to listen to Mather because he got the idea from a black slave. A doctor by the name of Zabdiel Boylston listened to Mather and inoculated his son and two slaves. Later on 280 people were inoculated and only 6 people died while those who weren't inoculated (5,889 people) 14% of the population died this proves Onesimus method true that if you infect people with disease they can build an immunity to it. Now this isn't to downplay the milkmaid story and yes Edward Jenner did find the vaccine for smallpox and made it safer for people however the foundation of the work started with Onesimus. It started with a practice brought from Africa that saved lives.
