Should those in political positions (or immediate family) be allowed to buy stocks?

There’s a lot of talk about how a lot of government officials invested in zoom right after they were briefed about the shutdown right before the covid virus was announced as a global pandemic. Due to politicians having access to prior knowledge and having lobbyists urging certain measures, do you think it should be legal for those in political positions (or their immediate family members) be able to purchase stock?

Insider trading is illegal, but it’s also a very broad definition. It’s too easy to get around, and many, many people (on both sides) have done some sketchy ass shit. Some are investigated, some aren’t; some are serving sentences for what they did; some aren’t. I don’t like the idea of government officials being able to trade, but I also question many other figures who could be privy to insider knowledge. I think it’s a severe conflict of interest, but those same people would be the ones regulating who is/isn’t allowed to trade, and/or voting to change these same regulations. So, despite the fact that I don’t think it’s moral, I don’t see anything changing. I do think, anyone who trades, and is in a position of power should be heavily scrutinized by the SEC.

We all knew this would happen if Biden was elected. I've held PLUG, FCEL, NIO and TSLA knowing they would surge even higher once he was in office. That wasn't really a surprise to anyone who trades on a daily basis. Same as anyone who noticed early in the pandemic that gyms were gonna close so the demand for peloton would go up. I just don't think that instance you are pointing out with Pelosi is in line with insider trading. Sure there are other instances in which I would say that's the case, but not this one. EV sector has been going up for months, just look at the Tesla and NIO charts.

I think they should be able to invest in the stock market, but they absolutely should not be able to benefit from special information to which the general public is not privy in order to profit from their investments in ways that the people they claim to represent cannot.

General investing is fine but this looks like Insider Trading. That should be investigated thoroughly and the Pelosi's and Biden held accountable for their involve in it.

No. I believe that’s called insider trading. And it’s illegal. Those in government positions are typically well aware of stock market trends before they hit public knowledge. Because of that, they shouldn’t be able to buy stocks with that type of access to private information.

Yes, they should be able to invest just like anybody else. Insider trading is illegal, and needs to be more strict. 
This is like asking if those in pharma should be able to buy stock or invest. Yes, of course they should, we just can’t buy a ton of stock low when we think one of our drugs is about to get FDA approval.

I think there is a difference between insider trading and just putting together common sense stock choices... I would expect this happens in any industry, but it is just on a far more powerful and influential scale in politics. I do think stock purchases should be scrutinized, but I also doubt there would be a lot of convictions over what can’t be proven.
