Would you live here ?

Question

I have 2 kids and I’m trying to find somewhere affordable I can move to . Someone told me they have a duplex that they live in for $500 and the other side is empty and we can move into there . The only thing is that it’s a 1 bedroom 😭 BUT was told the basement is big and nice and can basically be a bedroom . Now I was like fuck no at first cause you know the sound of having a bedroom in the basement .. BUT for $500 I’m starting not to mind .. would you ? Or no ?

Edit again : maybe I should’ve been more clear about what I was saying  . The basement will be MY room . Not my kids they will have the bedroom

I wouldn’t mind living in a basement. Ours is unfinished and would still be fine as a bedroom. The only thing I’d worry about is if it’s safe as a bedroom. I don’t know how to explain it, but some areas can’t legally be considered a bedroom if they don’t have certain things. But it’s about your comfort level. If it’s cheap and you can afford it, I’d go for it. If it helps you save up to move to a location you prefer, then that’s a bonus. Will you be on a lease?

I think it depends on the basement. Check to see if there’s mold anywhere. Is there a door that leads to the outside? Personally I would not put my kids down there if it had a door to the outside. Maybe you could put it as your room and put the kids room upstairs with a camera. For the price that’s not bad.

As long as it’s a  finished basement why not. $500 seems really cheap though depending on where you live. Around here 1 bed apartments are $1000-$1200. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Make sure you do your due diligence in researching the property and your potential lease for any red flags.

Depends. My friends own a duplex, they used to live in one unit and rent the other unit. The building has a basement, but you had to leave your unit to get to it. My friends used the basement as their “man cave” when they lived there, and we had to leave their unit of the duplex, lock up, and go down the stairs in the shared hallway to get to the room. So if it was set up like that, no, I wouldn’t live there with younger kids. When my friends moved out one of their renters asked if their older son (he was 18-ish I think) could use the basement as his bedroom and they charged some extra rent for it. So also depends on if the basement is included in this $500 already or would using it increase the rent.

It would depend a lot on the actual place. My friend lives in a basement apartment and it’s really nice. Are your kids both boys or both girls? I wouldn’t put a boy and girl in the same room unless they are really young. This would all probably be a no for me.

Yes. We don't get basements here but my dad converted the loft into a huge bedroom for my three younger sisters. It was amazing and I'm sure you can make a great space for your kids.
It also depends on how old the kids are though and how secure the entry to the basement is.
