Is co-sleeping dangerous?

FTM here and I’ve mostly heard that co-sleeping is dangerous, but I’d love some more information

Theres a difference between cosleeping and bed sharing. Some people consider cosleeping to be the same thing but cosleeping can be as general as having them in the same room but not the same bed. Them sleeping in your room is completely okay and is usually encouraged for the first 6m at least but bed sharing is different and can be dangerous. But its to each their own on what the parents choose to do. We coslept but never bedshared

The book Sweet Sleep was really helpful. La leche league produces it. I really wanted to bed share and heard it could be safe when done correctly so I picked up the book to learn how to do it correctly. By the time I realized what was required I decided against it. We would have needed a different mattress (ours is a foam Casper mattress and isn’t breathable enough). We would have needed to lower the bed to the floor and be willing to sleep with limited or no pillows and no sheets or blankets. So it just wasn’t for us. We have a bassinet that sits near our bed in our room to follow the APAs recommendation of sleeping in same room as baby for six months.
I would recommend the book for anyone regardless of how they plan to sleep. It does a great job of outlining the research behind what’s “safe” and “not safe”.

Sleeping in the same bed is a preference, but it comes with certain risks that need to be mitigated to do it more safely.
To make bed sharing safer, you can find guides online that usually involve things like getting a firmer mattress to support baby's back and keep thier airways open & lowering it to the floor.

Not sleeping with your baby is a very new concept. Until the last century or so, it was not only common to cosleep in the same room, but also to bed-share. There are ways to help you cosleep more safely if you or your partner are heavy sleepers and are worried about the possibility of SIDS or smothering. For example they have bedside bassinets that connect to your bed and keep baby in arm’s reach, but out of your own bed. Some parents will put the baby’s crib up against one side of the bed so that there’s a physical barrier but still keeps baby in easy reach. There are also cosleeper mats that you can use in your own bed.
At the end of the day, do what you are comfortable with. My parents bed-shared with me and both of my older brothers from day 1. My mom breastfed all of us so keeping us with her made that easier for her since all she had to do was prop herself up with a second pillow and put us on her chest. Never once did she have a scare or worry about us dying.

it’s depends what you mean by co-sleeping because it’s an umbrella term. room sharing is considered co-sleeping which is fine and poses no risks, having the baby sleep in the bed with you is very risky however. there’s a higher chance of SIDs or you could accidentally smother them, at the end of the day though it’s about what you think is best for you and your family. just do research and understand the risks before making a final decision

I bed-share with my 7 week old and have been doing it since we brought her home from the nicu at a week old. We follow the safe sleep seven. It was never our intentions but I would not get any sleep if we didn’t bedshare. Bed-sharing is recommended in most eastern countries one of them being Japan and they have the lowest rating for babies that die from SIDS.

I never planned on cosleeping with my kids, but both my kids would only sleep on their stomach. They would wake up after 2 minutes on their back and refused to sleep. We tried everything to get them to sleep in their crib close to us and they wouldn’t. So they both ended up in bed with me. However, that meant no blankets or pillows anywhere near them. Not even their feet. They would sleep on their side or back if they were close to me, but not anywhere else. Again, it wasn’t planned, but due to the fact we all needed sleep, we found a safe way to do it. I was a very light sleeper with them next to me. I woke up if anyone moved.
