Police Accountability

Do you guys think if we were to actually start holding police accountable for their actions that maybe there wouldn’t be such divide and hatred between law enforcement and society?

I’m not just talking about brutality and unjustified shootings but I’m talking about every other crime they commit.

*To preface, I’m from Philly, our corruption runs deep. Our city is pretty divided between those who think cops are just power hungry and get away with everything, those of us (where I would fall) that realize not all cops are good and not all cops are bad but that those that abuse their power or try to hide others doing the same should have consequences and lose their badge, and those tho believe that a badge suddenly means you are incapable of doing wrong and everything you do is right and lawful and just. The example I’m about to give you happened in an area where most people believe cops all cops are heroes and should be treated as such 24/7. I understand that this may seem a little crazy to those who live in smaller towns where it isn’t like this.*

Earlier this month, a police officer attended a fundraiser for another officer who was killed in the line of duty last year. From there he drove to our FOP lodge (fraternal order of police union). Whether or not he was continued to be served there is questionable because no one will say so either way. He was WASTED and then he got into his car and less than a mile away plowed THROUGH a house. Not just into it but going so fast he went all the way through it. The light he blew through there is not an option to go straight, you either turn right or left but he just went straight through the red light and into the house. The wife was pinned unconscious under the car, the husband was injured, a family dog was killed, and their home is literally destroyed. The wife is still in critical condition to this day 2 weeks later in the hospital.

Now the officer that did this on the other hand, was released on an insanely low bail and is comfortably at home awaiting trial under the condition he doesn’t drink and drive while his victims are trying to piece their life back together, heal from their own injuries, mourn the loss of their dog, and figure out their housing situation.

The FOP president only referred to it as an “unfortunate incident”.

Here are some of the comments I saw from the area where it happened since they are back the blue no matter what:

“This last year has been really hard on police officers, we should really consider his mental health before punishing him”

“He should be punished just like BLM who looted and rioted which is no punishment”

“Officers are human beings too, they make mistakes too and it shouldn’t ruin their lives”

So with those comments just being examples, do you think we’ll ever come close to bridging the gap between law enforcement and those who don’t trust them or will we be stuck like this for a long time because some people will refuse to ever see that a badge doesn’t automatically make someone a better human?
