Can you actually “grow out of” lactose intolerance ?

My mom said I was lactose intolerant as a baby & had to be put on soy formula. She said I grew out of it eventually but I remember growing up drinking regular milk as a kid & it always REALLY bothered my stomach. I could always eat cheese fine it’s just milk.

My daughter is 3 & was put on Similac sensitive at 2 weeks old because they said she was lactose sensitive but when she turned 1 they diagnosed her as lactose intolerant. She’s 3 now & like me, can eat cheese just fine but the minute she takes a sip of something with real milk she’s miserable.

I’m 24 & still have stomach issues when I drink milk.

So do we ACTUALLY “grow out of” it or do we just build up a tolerance for it??
