The AAP now recommends that kids should stay rear-facing until they reach the maximum height or weight that the car seat manufacturer allows. Most convertible car seats have rear-facing weight limits up to at least 40 pounds. For many children, that happens well beyond their second birthdays.
Why keep them rear-facing for so long? In a crash, the car seat’s hard shell supports the child’s head, neck, and spine, and the car seat absorbs most of the impact. When the child is forward-facing, however, the harness straps restrain the body, but the head can get thrown forward, which can cause injuries to the head and spine.

Nope- our first kid was rear faced until she was almost 4yrs old. She still doesn’t weigh 40lbs at 5yrs old. Rear facing is so much safer, the longer they can the better it is.

Our car seat on goes up to 35 pounds rear facing before turning it around so when he hit 34 pounds we asked his doctor and he said to flip him around.

No way. She’ll be rear facing until she’s closer to 4. We just turned our son forward facing about a month ago and he’s going to be 4 in May. Most states require you to keep your child rear racing until at least 2. However I’ve seen multiple articles that age 4 (or until they reach the rear facing weight or height limit is safest). It’s all because if in an accident prior to a certain age their bones aren’t developed enough to keep them safe forward facing.
