SAHM and Gifting SO

I’m a SAHM and my husband works. Even though I don’t work outside the household and bring in an income, I still like to get him gifts for his birthday, our anniversary, Christmas, and whatnot.

How do y’all go about gifting your SOs when they’re the ones making money and any purchases come from a joint account that you both can see?

I’ve been resorting to just talking him about it beforehand to make sure a big purchase is okay with him (I don’t need his permission to spend money, but out of respect, I run bigger purchases passed him), but it spoils the element of surprise.
