How long does it take until you learn the difference in your baby’s cries?

Is it an instinct or do you just try everything and then catch on to it eventually?

Im not sure i ever reallly knew their cries. Only when they were hurt i could hear the difference. When they cried i knew what they wanted more so because i knew what their schedule was i knew when it was time for them to be hungry again and such

I knew the difference between crying because of pain and because of other stuff instantly. That was more like an instinct plus there was a huge difference in the type of crying / body language of the baby.
Then between a dirty diaper, being bored, being sleepy or being hungry it took longer. Like several months, maybe half a year. Of course yawning or hunger cues helped determining what's most likely the issue but purely based on the crying it was difficult to hear the difference. I just tried everything and got it right eventually most of the times. 🙈 It became easier when she got older. And not even because of me as a mom got to know her "crying habits" better, but because she started to express herself differently depending what was wrong.

Okay this is far fetched, but it helped me to understand my baby’s cries a bit better. Look up Oprah’s video. She interviews someone named Priscilla Dunstan about it and she explains it. 
I don’t know how true it is, but it definitely helped me understand a bit better.

For me it was not instinctual. It took a few months to really clue on to what each cry meant. Once I did, smooth sailing. Due with our second in October and I know for sure I'm going go have to relearn because this baby probably won't cry the same as my daughter did and the tones/pitches will mean something different this go around. Definitely a learning curve. It's not super stressful. You just go down the list. Have they been changed or need changed, are they too hot or too cold, have they been fed or need to be fed, do they have gas, is there something as simple as a tag bugging their skin, are they tired, do they just want some snuggles. In no particular order. But yea.

This is a hard question. Sometimes it’s super obvious what your baby wants and other times it’s not. I’ve also learned that each baby is different and you just never know how they’re going to request help. ￼￼￼
