Worried about my 15 year old SIL?

Maya

My mother in law is making my 15 year old sister in law go on a 1000 calorie diet. (!!!)

My SIL is around 5”5 and 165lbs, so she is on the bigger side, but I am SO concerned with how they are handling her weight. Anything she eats is scrutinized, they called her “cow” for eating bread at breakfast and they always joke at her expense about her weight in front of everyone .. (“she can’t see food and not eat it” “she always has something in her mouth” etc) she always laughs it off but she is so young and I cannot imagine how damaging this can be for her health. Mentally and physically.

I have been with her brother for 3 years and married for 1 and I’m just not sure if I really have a place/say to step in and say something (gently) that maybe they are being too harsh. I do agree that she should maybe go to a nutritionist to learn more about calories/healthy options/working out etc and she should change her lifestyle and make healthier eating choices and go for a brisk walk, etc, but a 1000 calorie diet seems so extreme!!!

I need advice, I’ve been watching this happen silently for so long and I’m really considering intervening.
