Did I do the wrong thing?

Question

I was taking my two kids for a walk around my neighborhood in a double stroller. A woman’s big husky was out in her front yard with her but he wasn’t leashed. He ran towards us and I stopped to let him sniff me. He sniffed me and my kids and wasn’t being aggressive, but the woman ran over and started yelling at ME saying “why did you stop? Just keep on walking! He might attack you!” And she grabbed him and walked off. I said back “if he is aggressive why is in your front yard without a leash?” She didn’t respond but just went inside. Did I do the wrong thing by stopping? I was always told to never run from a dog but to let them sniff you so they know you’re not a threat.

I’m pretty sure you did just fine. She sounds kind of crazy and you’re right, if he’s aggressive then she should have him under control not expect strangers to just keep walking. Geez 🙄 Some people shouldn’t have dogs...

Never run from an approaching dog, they’ll perceive you as prey. Dogs are hunters! People forget that. I have done the same thing with loose dogs. I let them sniff and they move on.

Well, she said keep walking, she didn’t say run. Personally, I would have kept walking. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with stopping though. She’s the one who should’ve had her dog on a leash.

No you did nothing wrong that woman sounds crazy! This is the same reason why I don't like to walk my dogs around my neighborhood because so many people leave their big dogs out without a leash and their front yards and people get so offended if you tell them to put a leash on their dog.

Tbh I’d appreciate it.
My dog isn’t aggressive in the slightest but she’s big... and still a pup. When I walk both dogs people cross the road to avoid us.... and if she managed to get into the front yard to you worst case she would attempt to hop in the stroller with ur kids.... at least get in a good lick. If u ran she would probably follow thinking someone new was taking her for a walk. I’d be happy you made my job easier to get her back behind her fence instead of looking like a fool chasing a mumma, kids, and dog down the street then have to sheepishly apologise for putting you in that predicament and giving you and your kids unneeded fear. (Especially your kids) 
I always do the same unless the dog approaches aggressively....

Always get in front of your kids and always be the first one to greet the dog. Its better that you get bit than your child mauled. We actually have walking sticks for aggressive dogs when we go for walks, only used for emergencies. 
Anyways, I would report her if her dog is supposedly aggressive and off a leash, but maybe she was making a point saying just keep walking if you see a dog unleashed because you'd never know.

She did the wrong thing by not having her dog leashed, aggressive or not. Also- I’m not going to go running from a dog approaching me since then it’ll chase me (and if kids are with me) down the street and probably would attack. When I see a loose dog, I tend to stand still and hope the owner comes or it walks away. Now that I have my son, I keep pepper spray on the stroller. That way if an aggressive dog does come at us, I can protect us.
