Is it too far gone??

I need some reassurance. My baby favors his right side and has a bit of a flat head because of it. Our doctor said they aren’t going to look into helmets until 6 months, so we’ve done a ton more tummy time and sitting up in the last month because his head control has gotten way better! However it still looks like this 😞

He’ll be 5 months on July 5th.. I’m assuming he’ll definitely need a helmet, but I doubt my insurance will cover it. Can someone tell me about their experiences with the helmets, how long your baby needed it, how much it cost, etc? There is so much stigma around helmets and I can’t help but feel like a failure :(

My second baby girl just got her helmet last week!  We did tummy time and repositioning and unfortunately it didn’t work.  I know there’s a bad stigma but I am here to kill it.  Flat heads are quite common now that we practice safe sleeping on their backs.  I am not a bad mom because my daughter needs a helmet.  I did everything I was told to do to avoid it and here we are.

Take him to a chiropractor. Torticollis is what he has and it needs corrected. Once that is corrected then he will be able to freely move his neck and the flat spot will possibly start rounding out, especially if hes mobile lifting his head and a lot a lot a lot of tummy time.

My son’s head looked just like that and they told me he didn’t need a helmet. He’s two now and it’s definitely still flat, can’t tell much when his hair is dry but when it’s wet you can. It still bothers me a little bit.

We had a helmet and didn’t start until 6 months. Our sons head was very flat. To be honest your LOs doesn’t look too bad. They have to be rather significant to qualify for a helmet. Our helmet person said almost no insurance will cover it as it’s cosmetic unless your child requires surgery (like breaking of the skull plates) and then will cover it. Ours cost exactly $1,000. We were also told he was like that from birth and almost no amount of tummy time was going to help it especially when they sleep in their backs. Good luck!

Just keep going! Your doing great! Make sure when you lay him down you face him different directions like head pointing toward the top of the Crib and then the next time the bottom. Same when playing and when doing any other activities. Babies love light so in a room with a window you can lay him to encourage him to look the other way.
