Why is dating so hard :( am I wrong?

I recently started taking to this guy online and were 26/35. We were talking for a month and we really liked each other. We hadn’t met yet because we both had busy schedules with work and his kids. I text him that me and my girlfriends were hanging out and swimming but going to go to his town to watch the fireworks (it’s the town near mine) I asked his suggestions on places to have a drink in that town since me and my friends wanted to grab a drink before. He told me a place and said he was actually on his way there with his friend. I told him I wasn’t planning to meet up with him since I was with my girlfriends and I rarely go out with them I just wanted to know good places there but if he happened to be there that is fine and he could join us for a moment. I told him we might go to that one not sure. He kept asking if I was there yet or on my way. Him and I also had plans to meet up the next day and spend the day together. I didn’t want to be rude and randomly just meet up with this guy when I had planned a night with my friends. I ended up getting really car sick so we didn’t go have drinks we just went straight to the fireworks (I even told him that)He kept texting “if you come you don’t have to pay anything because I know the owner” and asking if I was on my way. I didn’t see those two texts until the next morning because I was so sick I fell asleep. I text him good morning and stuff and let him know I just got his texts. He never responded. We never went on our date and haven’t talked since now. Was I in the wrong? It’s not like we had plans but he did really want to meet me.
