You guys are about to come after me but here are my thoughts: I agree with another comment on here. A lot of you guys are like “yeah of course!” but diverse friendships like that usually aren’t super common. Societally speaking, people usually share economic classes with their friends. This is for several reasons such as having things in common, where you like to go and do things, etc. My best friend and I were both super, super poor. Like deep in poverty and we bonded over “the struggle”. Well, I eventually married, went to school, and moved to California. Now my husband and I are definitely upper class. Although I didn’t rub anything in her face, just my day-to-day talk would come off like I was bragging and we couldn’t relate anymore. I loved her and her financial situation didn’t bother me but no, we couldn’t go to Rodeo Drive together. We couldn’t go on vacations together. A lot of the things I came to love and do, she couldn’t do. This drove a big wedge between us because we couldn’t relate. I would never NOT be friends with people in a different economic status, but there’s reasons you don’t see it often.

I actually think this is an interesting question on a societal level. Most people say they’d be friends with people of different beliefs, ethnicities and social class, but when you actually measure the existence of these diverse friendships, it’s a bit more debatable. They cover this phenomenon in the book « Racism without Racists » and the color-blind attitude v. actual interracial friendships. I also think in a lot of urban studies, sociologists have realized that even in diverse cities, social « mix » doesn’t always lead to profound social mixing or deep cross-class relationships (Vincent et al; Sylvie Tissot…). Of course it’s possible and friendships are more diverse now than they ever were in the past but it’s not perfect harmony either.

I put “no I am not” I want to note that I would be but in reality the vast majority of my friends happen to be in the same place as me financially. I grew up very poor and am now doing quite well. As I’ve grown older and worked my way up the career ladder I’ve found many of my friends changed along with my interests. In fact my closest friend also grew up poor and is doing even better than me financially…I am still in touch with those from my childhood who maybe aren’t doing as well but we don’t have as much in common anymore. As for the question Would I be friends with someone who isn’t in the same “class” yep, you bet but the truth is I might not have as much in common with someone who is in a much wealthier class or one that isn’t as well off… not impossible but just trying to be honest.

Ya..why wouldn't I?? I married.someone about as different a socioeconomic class as possible. I grew up super extremely poor...like an income most people couldn't fathom living off of and I had been homeless a few times. I married someone whose parents are literal old money multi millionaires. When I met my now husband I had only been not living in my car about 6 months where as he was in a pent house his parents owned. We met and hit it off...nothing else mattered..now a decade+ into our relationship the only weirdness is hearing stories and seeing how different our families and upbringing were. Your income doesn't mean much to me. The values and general person behind the income matters. If my street rat ass can marry rich folk like my husband and have it work it shouldn't matter for any gap.

I’m a teacher and I’m friends with two of my students parents. I’m middle class they are working class. We have big differences in regards to access to healthcare, housing, and travel. It makes a big difference in the types of activities you can do together. When I was in college, I had a friend that is upper class and sometimes we struggled finding activities and restaurants we both could/wanted to go together. Sometimes when she wanted to go somewhere expensive or go to a music festival and she’d just pay my way cuz she wanted me to go with her. Class matters.

Of course. Any particular reason why I shouldn't be? I was in a lower economic class as my friends in high school and as the "poor" friend, it completely sucked not even being asked to participate in certain things. I wouldn't want to subject anyone to feeling that crappy.
