“How much weight have you gained”?
Hey mamas! Reporting live from 36 weeks and zero days to offer some food for thought, regardless of where you might be in your pregnancy:
I see a lot of posts asking “how much weight has everyone gained? This question is tricky and can be triggering for so many in our community for a myriad of reasons. From body image issues to fat phobia, becoming mommies doesn’t absolve us of these challenges.
Additionally, replies usually have little to no context on weight/BMI pre-pregnancy and can really set the wrong tone for FTM who might lust after pics of pregnancy influencers with bump abs (calling myself out!) I’ve learned since being in this community that the health profiles of us all as members is SO varied!
Instead of my gut reaction (to be upset at anyone worried about gain or loss especially in the 3rd tri) here’s a breakdown of an average 30 pound weight gain (again total based on a specific BMI range) so I don’t shame anyone and contradict myself:
1.5 pounds: the placenta
7 pounds: maternal stores of fat, protein, and other nutrients
7.5 pounds: your average full-term baby
2 pounds: breast tissue (we know it feels like so much more!)
4 pounds: increased fluid volume
4 pounds: increased blood volume
2 pounds: the uterus
2 pounds: amniotic fluid
At 35+ weeks, your gains are what they are and it’s important to note that the most important aspect of any of this is that your body is developing not only your baby but the proper support system for a healthy baby. Research (not Google and search forums filled with self-doubting projections) the current recommended ranges of weight gain based on your PP BMI from the authorities on pregnancy in medical community in your state/country.
Please talk with your OB, midwife, or even MH professional if you have concerns about weight gain that impact your appetite or thoughts on priority of weight loss postpartum as these can be signs of postpartum depression (which is experienced in 1 in 2 women during pregnancy and 1 in 9 women afterward)
Personally, after a MAJOR BPD episode that lasted over 1/2 my pregnancy, I am so elated to see the light and be focused on meeting my first little chicken nugget.
—let’s all focus on a healthy pregnancy/L&D mentally, emotionally, and physically no matter what that looks like for us all mamas! Love to you all 💕
