If you give a gift, is it rude to ask for it back?

Recently my bf’s mother asked for a gift she gave me 6+ months ago back. 
It was a used (and moldy!!!) item for my dog. 
I ended up throwing it away… and now she’s asked for it back. 
I sent her a new replacement because I feel responsible for the item. Still, though … it’s a really awkward situation & I guess I’m looking for second opinions. What do y’all think?

That’s tacky, especially for a dog item?? If it were a family heirloom, that someone expressed their distaste for, or they were looking to sell or get rid of it, I’d absolutely ask for it back.

Girl I would have placed the chewed up, slimed up, moldy dog toy right in her hands. With some peanut butter slathered on it too 😂😂😂 what in gods name is wrong with this lady?? 😫🤣

There is a difference between a gift and an item someone loans you! I would never loan someone a collar, harness or lead, I would just give it away. But something bigger like a crate I would loan it to someone or sell it. 
Used dog beds I definitely would give away unless it's fairly new, but they are not endless like our own mattresses.
I would never try to get a gift back, unless it's a family heirloom I know someone is trying to sell or throw away, but it's really important to set terms to those items before they are given so stuff like that doesn't or are less likely to happen.

Very rude and very tacky. I would’ve just said no because you threw it out when it got moldy.
