First appointment, no ultrasound?

I have my first appointment with my doctor this coming Wednesday! I'll be 9 weeks and 1 day. I was told from a friend that used the same office they don't do an ultrasound the first appointment? Is this normal? How will they know if the baby is doing okay? If anyone else has had an appointment like this what do you do/cover in the appointment? Do you get to hear a heartbeat? When do you normally get your first ultrasound? Any advice or suggestions on what to ask or talk about would be wonderful, this is our first baby!

Most first prenatal visits do not include an ultrasound unfortunately, unless you did ivf, were on fertility meds or have spotting/bleeding or a history of miscarriage or other complications. At my ob office the first visit usually includes giving urine and blood samples if you haven’t already, checking your weight and blood pressure, and basically a routine checkup, including a pap. But no ultrasound on the first visit. A lot of doctors don’t like to do an early ultrasound because honestly there isn’t a whole lot there to see since baby is so tiny. The next visit after that one is usually your first ultrasound. I have to get an early scan this Thursday 9/9 because I was on Clomid (fertility med) to help get pregnant and then will have my first prenatal appointment on Monday 9/13.

When I scheduled my appointment the scheduler worded it like my ultrasound appointment was at 1:30 then appointment with OB at 2:00. Almost like two separate things, as if the OB has nothing to do with the ultrasound. I wonder if you call back and ask to make an appointment for an ultrasound the same day if they would do that!

First visit was just a blood draw and medical history. That was at 7 weeks. Next appointment with the actual doctor will be at almost 11 weeks and I believe they will do an ultrasound then.

I got a transvaginal ultrasound during my first appointment in both pregnancies... usually around 7-8 weeks... I didn't hear the heartbeat but the technician pointed out the flickering beat on the screen... After that they took a urine sample and asked me general pregnancy questions, they scheduled a second appointment for when I'm 12 weeks.

This is normal. I had my first appointment at 5 weeks. Blood work and all that boring stuff. My US is this Wednesday. I’ll be 7 weeks 6 days.

The first appointment is generally a “nurses interview” and they just ask you questions about genetic history in your family & your health history & then they give you forms & usually order a bunch of blood tests & set up an appointment for your first ultrasound.
