He’s a really nice guy what to do

So I met this guy about three weeks ago when I first met him he was honest and told me he just got out of prison and he told me what he did basically he was in the streets and he use to carry so one day some tried to kill him but he shot the guy first but the person is alive today so back to now we talk and FaceTime everyday he very determined to get a job and do things the right way but the only problem I’m in a state away but in the south of my state but we made plans this weekend I’m going to see him and my family I don’t expect him to pay for anything cause i know his situation even tho he has money and he was gonna come to me but can’t leave his state I just want to know if I was making the right decision even tho I know what’s best for me I just want others input
