Am I the wacko?

Question

I saw a picture in a group of a toddler touching the oven door. The post was about the kiddo being excited about food being in the oven and waiting for it. Everyone was doting over him. 
And I'm over here like..."does no one care this kid is touching the oven?" 
And then all the moms are like, "Oh my gosh, it's obviously not hurting him, he's so happy!" And like, "Newer ovens like this don't actually get hot on the outside, duh!"
...okay, well, we also have a newer, nice oven. BUT isn't it just good safety practice to teach your kids not to touch ovens? Like, am I crazy? One day they might be near an oven that DOES get hot, and they  will get burned. Example: my friend has a huge range that looks like it's maybe from the 60s. That sucker definitely gets hot. Luckily, my kids know not to touch ovens. 🤷🏼‍♀️ But they made me feel crazy!

I really don't think it's that big of a deal. Our oven is from the 50s and it gets warm to the touch but it won't burn you. And kids are perfectly capable of learning that some things are ok at home and not in other places. Unless they're opening the door and trying to touch the things inside, they're not going to get injured.

Ovens are designed to not get too hot on the outside. Not too big of a deal. My son knows to back away when I have it open though!

I let my kids touch the outside. I also let them touch things that may be too warm/leading to hot (obviously not actually hot). I think its hard to teach the feeling of hot if they don't learn what it feels like. But if you're close by and they touch something too warm, it's good to teach "oh is that hot? Ouch. Hot can hurt. We don't touch things that are hot"

I dont think its a big deal. Our oldest is only 2 and knows that when the over door opens for us to put something in or out that she needs to back up or leave the kitchen. She will tell us “hot, hot, hot”.

You are supposed to be able to touch the outside of an oven. Otherwise you wouldn’t be able to cook. Kids will eventually learn how to cook and will need to touch an oven. It’s the inside of the oven that you don’t touch. It’s actually very rare to come across an oven these days that is hot to the touch on the outside, so I would keep those incidents isolated and not teach your child how to fear an oven. It’s a tool that he will need to use in every day life.

My smaller kids aren't even allowed in the kitchen while I cook. I do have a really small kitchen though. They know not to touch an oven.  So I guess I'll be a wacko with you...

I’ve never been around an oven that got hot on the outside. Warm, sure, but not hot enough to cause any pain or even discomfort. My kids know to stay away when it’s open but otherwise there’s no issue with them watching the oven work.

In general, regardless of age, the outside of oven doors don't get hot, it's a safety feature. They get warm, but not warm enough to even be uncomfortable touching for a long period of time. If they got hot, everyone would get uncomfortable cooking at the stove while the oven was on. My electric oven is from the 90s, my kid touches it all the time. There's a child lock on the door for a reason. My mom's oven is gas from like 2016 and doesn't get hot. My MIL has an industrial gas oven and it gets warmer than most but still safe to touch. You're overreacting.

Nope my kid knows to stay out the kitchen. Too many things happen when something is in the oven or on the stove. If we’re making something together I’ll bring it to the table and we’ll do it there. Or if she wants to stir something I’m right there and then tell her go play.

I know no one with an oven from the 60s. Ovens are pretty standard not to get hot from the outside...it isnt terribly concerning to me.
