Single mamma last name query

Hey yall I am on my way to becoming a single mumma. My sons dad is a drug dealer who has been violent to me for several occasions. For these reasons I decided not to be with him, I also have a feeling that he might be a narcissist.

With all this mind, is it okay if I give my son my last name instead of his dads? Will he (my son) resent me for this or is it okay? I’m only asking because I literally no no one who’s named their baby without the dads name so I just wonder if it’s legal and moral thing for me to do.
