Can someone explain how a kindle works?

I’m curious cause I got one for my mom for Christmas cause lately she picked up a new hobby of reading and she was reading some book on her phone and she was saying she’s really annoyed cause it’s a really good book but each chapter costs money.
So, on a kindle is there like an App Store for buying books or something?? Is there any free ones? Are they regular price to normal books?? Do you make an account or something? Anyone who has one or knows anything pls let me know thnx

With the Kindle, they have their own store where you can purchase apps, books, they usually have books on sale, they have a $.99 section or low cost box, you can search by author or book title, and you can obviously buy gift cards and things like that, but of course everything is for payment, there are some free ones on there, but a lot of times they let you sample a certain number of chapters, before you buy a book, or a certain number of pages, but of course they want to make money so of course you have to purchase things. I have on my cell phone the nook by Barnes and nobles app. And it’s the same concept as as a Kindle, but you can also download games and things like that I believe on a Kindle. Maybe get her a gift card as well so that she can purchase apps and books and things.￼
