Has anyone had to pay out of pocket for NIPT TEST?

I had the option to pay out of pocket or bill to my insurance so because of the type of insurance I have I knew they’d deny it so I paid $250 out of pocket.

I also do medical billing most don’t do it unless you already have a chromosome issue. It’s considered unneeded and experimental. But your obgyn should’ve went over that before allowing you to get the test. Mine said my primary insurance with my employer (AETNA HCA) would not cover it but (superior pregnant women) would.

What company did the nipt test? I forgot what company did it my last pregnancy but they cover it if your husband is active duty.

Unfortunately most insurance companies do not cover NIPT tests. Your doctor should have informed you of that. You can usually call the lab before having the test and let them know you would like them not to Bill the insurance company and they cut you a better deal if you just pay out of pocket. Now that they have already billed the insurance I’m not sure if they will cut you a deal. Welcome to healthcare in America!!…woohoo!! 😏

Natera called me and asked if I wanted to go through insurance or pay $99.  I said to just pay the $99 and not to go through my insurance. Hopefully you have a self pay option!

I had to pay out of pocket and it was around $250? That’s the amount they bill insurance, it’s not how much you would pay. They have adjusted rates.

Tricare won’t pay for the NIPT unless there is medical necessity (prior high risk screens in previous pregnancies or older maternal age). If you’re using a civilian provider, double check with how they coded it. I haven’t seen it cost that much though. For my first they told me tricare wouldn’t cover it and it would be like $300 out of pocket
