When did you put a stop to thumb sucking?

My kiddo is almost 2 (20 months right now) and I keep getting mixed information on when to put a stop to it. He’s never taken a pacifier and I have tried recently and nope he’s not having it. He really only does it at night or when he’s hurt or tired. I know it’s bad and all that but he still seems so young to end it right now. Wondering when I need to do it? Also let me know if something worked well for you!

My daughter was never a thumb sucker but she really liked her pacifier. When I talked to her pediatric dentist she advised that between 2-3 is the best time to break the habit. She did say if she started sucking her fingers to give her the pacifier back because finger sucking is an extremely hard habit to break since you can't take them away and teeth tend to do more damage than a pacifier. With that, I was a thumb sucker until I was 7 and me teeth were messed up horribly. What finally got me to stop was my. Parents kept sticking my finger in red pepper. I don't advise that but the sooner you stop it the better. I would reach out to the dentist and ask their opinion on the best way to stop

My thumb sucker is 5 years old and nobody’s told us we need to stop her yet. Between 4 and 5 she cut down on it a lot all on her own, really only does it to get to sleep now. When she was younger she had the arched teeth (we called them rainbow teeth) and her mouth looked exactly like she sucked her thumb all day long. Back then the doctor and dentist told us no need to worry because her mouth would go back to normal on their own when she started sucking it less. And they were right. Her teeth are straight now, no more rainbow in there. She was at the dentist last month and they had zero concerns about it.
