Did your baby lose weight in the first week?

My baby lost 3% of his birth weight and I'm not sure if this is good? My midwife has to rush off out for a emergency birth so I didn't get to ask!

My daughter dropped dramatic weight in 2 days due to a jaundice issue but I mainly think it was the hospital negligence pushing breast feeding instead of making sure I was bottle feeding as well to make sure she was getting enough. I have breast issues already so that’s why I said I blame them. A week after she was born she was weighing in a few oz over her birth weight

Absolutely, it’s very normal, so don’t worry. My pediatrician said it’s not a concern unless they lose over 11% of their birth weight. My son lost 13% but after 5 days in NICU we got to go home even though he was still small, he was only 3 weeks early but had difficulty breathing and was on a feeding tube after c-section. But it’s now exactly 1 month!!!! And he went for his one month checkup and had gained so much he’d finally passed his birthweight and some! Dr never had any health concerns after the initial respiratory issues of fluid on his lungs from being early and c-section. So don’t worry. They catch up fast!

Yes. That’s very normal and almost expected. My daughter was 7lbs at birth and 5lbs14oz at discharge. She lost more than 10% so we had to have daily weight checks for the first week.

That’s totally fine. The thresholds vary depending on who you talk to but usually it’s at least 10% to be expected. Especially if you had IV fluids during labor since it saturated the baby and falsely raises their birth weight. Don’t fret!

Yes. Our first lost 10.5% (11% was considered failure to thrive in our hospital) and our second lost 9%. Our first was a 37 weeker and just more interested in sleep than food. We had to annoy the crap out of him every 2 hours to get him to eat. Our second had a tongue and lip tie that we had corrected.

My girl lost more but she had excessive fluid from being head down for so long. Plus, she was really tiny so 10% was a small amount. They were cautiously watching her but weren’t worried as she was eating! 
My girl was born 4lbs 11oz (born 35+4). Dropped to 3lbs 13oz by day 5. Then started to increase weight. Never supplemented with formula. She was 4lbs 12oz by 2 weeks which was perfect. They expect to see back at birth weight by 2 weeks. My girl is healthy, gaining on her growth curve, and hitting all milestones according to birth age (not corrected).

My first was born at 7lbs12oz and was down to 7lbs2oz in the first 4 days. By day 8, he was back up to 8lbs3oz
It is very normal for babies to lose some weight in the first week, especially the first few days!! I definitely wouldn’t stress unless your midwife tells you something is wrong. Just keep snuggling and feeding on demand 😊
