Pumping at night?

Hello, my almost 3 month old has started sleeping through the night the last few nights, and my question is should I be waking up to pump still since she isn’t eating? She still seems satisfied with my milk supply throughout the day, so I was thinking it would be okay not to, but I just have no experience with this as my son didn’t sleep through the night until he was 18 months and had weaned himself anyways.

With my son I never woke up to pump. I would be stupid full and leaking by morning and then just pump a ton!  I needed my sleep more than I needed to pump constantly lol.  I only nursed and pumped for 6 months and also substituted formula.  So I wasn’t worried personally.  So it’s what works best for you and your little one. Xo

I never did. The first couple nights I definitely woke up engorged and leaking, but my body caught on. My supply never suffered. As long as baby makes up for it during the day, you shouldn’t need to. I did usually squeeze in a pumping session before I went to bed just to help with the full feeling. Best part is baby will not be able to empty you completely so you can pump and save all that extra milk.

I reached out to the lactation consultant because my daughter started sleeping through the night at 3 months as well and she said “typically babies will get the calories they need during the day and provide enough stimulation to produce what they need. It can be a little painful for you as your breasts can get full during the night, but that improves over time as well. See how it goes, and if you notice a drop in your supply, maybe throw in an extra pumping session after her morning feed.” So, enjoy your sleep! Don’t worry about pumping at night. My daughter is 4 months now and I haven’t had any issues with supply.

If you wake up uncomfortable then I recommend pumping at night, but otherwise you’re probably ok to enjoy the extra sleep.
