How do you rent a home in another state?

So we are planning to move to another state, it would be an 8 hour drive. But how do most people do this? How do you guys rent a home in another state without seeing it first? I have my father in law over there is it better to ask him to find us a place so we can go there directly!? We are also planning on buying a house over there once we get settled

I would line up several showings of places I find online and go look at all of them.   I would not rent something sight unseen.

When we moved to CA we got an Airbnb for a month and scheduled a bunch of apartment tours. We ended up only staying there for a little over a week before moving in to our apartment. We got lucky though-housing is super competitive here. I’d say if you’re moving somewhere that has a high housing competitiveness, get a hotel/Airbnb for a month. If it’s not competitive, you could probably do a week

We lined up a number of showings in one day and went to look at them all before making a decision. I will never live somewhere I haven’t seen in person. We have done this for 4 different moves, the most recent one cross country.

Our current place we rented and only saw it virtually. The real estate agent video chatted us and we took a tour. We told her what needed to be fixed and then she went back after they painted and again gave us a tour. We also did a lot of Google searches about the building and asked in local groups what everyone's experience was.
