Neighbors gave us mice....

So we have lived in our house for about 9 yrs now. The city made it legal to have back yard chickens last year, which is great *when done right*. A new neighbor moved in and build the jankiest "coop" if you could even call it that ever. Within 2 months of them building the completely uncontained coop thing with open food barrles the whole damn neighborhood has mice. The city has no specifications on the coop or anything so nothing can be done at this point. Maybe city council can at some point but we are having council members issues and turnover and that isn't their priority. We have all asked to assist them, build them a nicer coop, buy actual sealed food containers, have teens help them clean for school service. No they believe their chickens are good "because they saw a exact coop on facebook". So now their chickens are exposed to hawks/eagles/raccoons/mink that are gonna kill them and we all have appts with pest control that share property lines. We all are watching because right now it isn't inhumane but as soon as it is we plan to call animal control. That is an unsafe like for the birds and a huge nuisance. So if anyone here wants backyard chickens..more power to you but please do it right. And when quote coop because it is a unstable pvc creation with some garden clothe over part of it for shade. That is literally it.

Edit: Ya...we don't live in a hot climate at all. We actually live in a very wet climate which means that they have no real block from the rain amd also have no floor or anyway to get off thr muddy ground besides a log they tossed in for a perch. They have zero protection from any predator and they started a few months ago with 18 birds and now have 12. We have hawks, bald eagles, golden eagles, mink, raccoons, foxes, bobcats, etc. They are literally being picked off the coop isn't even attached to the ground. They made a pvc pipe (1 in diameter so not even strong) cube and tossed a cloth ivet and tied it to the structure. What we get wind it moves and the chickens get out and have no shelter. We live in a rural suburb. We all know what chicken coops should be. This is janky and yes mice are everywhere. However we went from not a single house having issues inside to the 3 houses that share a fence with them having mice everywhere. Chicken coops being in rats and mice if done wrong. Also their food is a open pile under a porch cover. No lid, no even real container. They take a shovel and give them some daily. And not getting an outdoor cat. Besides them also getting killed where we live outdoor cats have a lower life expectancy and hurt other local populations that are also important.
