Does this sound accurate or sketchy?

My boyfriend and I have 2 children together and I feel like something is weird about his tax return. He got a new job in Feb 2021. He started working roughly 55 hours a week and started bringing home $600 checks, sometimes even more. He also got a 401K. The only time he’s really missed is 3 weeks of the whole year - 1 week for paternity leave and 2 weeks because we got covid. 
But he claims his tax return in total is only $300 all together. He told me it was lower because there’s new tax laws, but when I was using his phone the other day, a family member texted him about being in a higher tax bracket but he deleted the conversation. I am paranoid because he has a history of lying and I’m worried he’s lying so he can use the money for irresponsible activity. So his family member telling him something different than what he told me and him deleting the convo makes me sketched out.

I mean if you were married it would be so much easier to get to the bottom of it 🤦🏻‍♀️ yeah doesn't sound right unless he's in deep with debt and collectors are eating him up. Weird . Hope you figure it out. That's messed up if that's really all his refund is though

You get less in a higher tax bracket plus IF he got ctc and stimulus this year, many are reported to have a much lower return. Ours is normally over $5k, it’s $700 this year. That’s it.

Being in a higher tax bracket, the new job not taking enough out in taxes, the child care credit throughout the year… there’s several logical reasons why his return would be lower.

Maybe he doesn’t get much taken out throughout the year, so he owes more at the end?   Since he’s making so little, maybe there’s not as much wiggle room.   Then again, I also feel like I see people who don’t make much money and they get giant returns.  So I don’t really know!   Just ask to see the return:) It will say just about everything on one page.

Something doesn't seem right but I'm not sure what.  What did he claim for withholding on his w4? How much is he contributing to his 401k? There hasn't been a major overhaul of tax changes since 2017 or 2018 and the standard deductions only went up $150 this year.  His take home pay doesn't indicate he would have moved into a higher bracket based on this year's figures but you'd need to know his salary before all taxes, insurance, 401k deductions etc.  Did he use a website or software?

My husband made twice as much last year than in 2019. Last year he got like a $1000 refund. But this year his higher income put him in a higher tax bracket and disqualified him for a tax credit. He owes $400 this year. I wouldn't stress over it. I thought his was a mistake but I did it on two different platforms.

The more you make, the more you owe. Plus with the child tax credit this admin did, you’ve possibly been getting the refund you’d normally get for having children/dependents all along so that could be a factor in the smaller refund.
