Sleepy newborns

Is anyone else struggling with super sleepy newborns?

My baby is now a week old and we EBF, he lost a few oz (10% of birth weight but he was big anyway) at first check up so it was suggested I feed every two hours instead of 3 and if his weight doesn’t pick up next time we’ll think about expressing aswell.

Trouble is he’s soo hard to wake, and keep awake during feeds.

I try undressing, changing nappy, sitting him up a little and patting his back etc but even if I can rouse him enough to feed he doesn’t stay awake when feeding.

He has a couple of active periods a day maybe a couple of hours and when he becomes active I offer milk and he’ll take fine but otherwise he’s definitely sleeping close to 20 hours a day.

Midwife didn’t seem too worried, just said to keep a watch on nappies and we’re getting 1-2 dirty and 5-6 heavy wet each day so he must be getting the milk

It’s been a few years but I can’t remember what my last child was like these first few weeks 😕
