How do you respond if your 3yo child says something rude to you?

Like if you’ve put in place a boundary and then they get angry and say something like “You’re stupid”, how do you/would you respond?

Answer

These little humans don't always realize what they say, or what it means, or how it makes other people feel. Little one might have heard it somewhere and thought it was okay to say it. Maybe take them to one side and have a chat with them, ask them why they said it, maybe it wasn't meant to be rude. We have to teach and guide them, don't moan or shout or go off at them, they are still learning. If it continues to happen after you've spoken about it and said it's not very nice or kind to say that to someone then you could take more action, maybe a time out or however you choose.
I know it hurts when they say things like that but it's very important to respond calmly and do some digging.

We make it very clear through stern communication when our son is not being a good friend / not being nice. He has a sticker chart and being intentionally hurtful - physically or with words - costs him his sticker and then he doesn’t get his reward. He also has to take a break from whatever he’s doing in the moment to talk to us about the situation, which he’s not a fan of because he knows what he did was wrong.
