Daycare and breastfeeding

Elizabeth

Hello all - my girl is 10 months old and I’ve been EBF with her. She’s my first (and probably only) kid and it’s gone SO well. One of my friends is a LC and I think that has been a big reason we have been successful.

Last fall, baby girl was taking bottles at daycare. Then when our schedule got crazy around Christmas and she was teething heavy, she decided bottles weren’t for her. She would nurse with me at night and, after some struggles, I finally got her going on sippy cups.

When we’re home, she drinks from the cups. She also eats peas, black beans, avocado, cheerios, teething crackers, most fruit, salmon, pancakes, etc. Her dad is lactose intolerant so we haven’t tried dairy (both times that I had dairy, she had really bad vomiting spells so I’ve been dairy free since last summer).

Now she’s teething again - not in the best mood. And daycare was closed last week. The result is that she’s off schedule again and isn’t eating at daycare. She eats supper with me (always has a good appetite) and downs the sippy cup, breast, whatever. 🙃

I think she has her days and nights mixed up (she wakes every 4ish hours to eat overnight). I know I need to fix this. But work is really stressful right now and we’re moving in 2 weeks. We can fix the days/nights later, IMO. But daycare is very concerned that she needs to be eating more as her first birthday is coming up and she shouldn’t be sustained on breast milk.

I get their point of view. But I don’t think breast milk is a problem. Baby girl isn’t starving (has lots of fat rolls) and is a really happy kid when her teeth aren’t bothering her. And this probably sounds crazy, but I don’t mind getting up in the night. I know she’s my only kid, so I try to soak up every moment - even the 3 a.m. moments.

I think the daycare director thinks baby girl should be weaned soon. She mentioned starting her on cow or other milk at one year. 😢 I have so much milk stored! And I’m not ready to stop breastfeeding. But maybe I should??

How do you know if it’s best to stop breastfeeding? Are they right about her eating? And, if not, how do I advocate that we’re going to do this at our own pace?

Thank you - a FTM feeling completely out of her depth
