How do you bring up disagreements about parenting with your partner?

Curious, how do you all handle when your spouse does a bad parenting move, or is being to harsh, just doing something you don’t agree with regarding the kids how do you bring it up to them?

Answer

Gently and in private. Never in front of the kids. If your partner was snappy then privately encourage them to fix the situation with the child. If your partner is violent then leaving is the only answer.

Strive to address things later on when your child out of earshot or better still, sleeping. Over time correcting a partner in front of the child does damage to them both.
Address it the whatever way works when you address other big issues in your relationship.
I should add: Deal with any immediate safety issue in the moment and repair damage to your partner’s ego later with respect, assuming ignorance not neglect.

We agreed on a standard script with each other early on so that we both can address disagreements in a respectful and constructive way. Privately, we start with “I’d like to talk to you about xyz, if you’re ready to hear my views on the situation.”
If we’re worked up about something, we know we can say, “I’m not ready to talk about this now” or “I need some time to think about this before we have a conversation” or whatever. And then when we’re both ready to have a constructive talk, where we can both listen, then we’ll talk.

Depending on what is/was, I speak on it in the moment. I try not to so that we aren’t openly disagreeing in front the children, but sometimes I can’t help it. Other times, I wait until he’s done & when we’re alone I casually bring it to his attention (I didn’t like how you handled *situation* .. I think you could’ve done *whatever* differently) & we eventually come to a mutual understanding.
