Painful periods while breastfeeding

My baby is 13 months old ebf since birth. My period returned when he was 4 months old. Before having him, I NEVER had period pains. However, now I feel a lot of pain in my periods with cramps etc and rely on pain relief for the first couple days of a period. Is it normal for periods to become more painful after having a baby or is it from breastfeeding? I'm worried incase there's something wrong as my cycle has also got shorter. I'm not on any contraception (we use condoms so not TTC at the moment). Just want to hear if anyone else had this.
