Can someone explain tandem nursing?

How does it work? When you give birth do you go back to producing colostrum? Does baby 2 not get any colostrum because you already have mature milk? Does your body prioritize meeting the nutritional needs of the older or the younger baby? Obviously it works, but I’m curious and wondering if anyone knows the logístics of it all. Our boobs are amazing!

I went back to making colostrum around third trimester. I still had to wait a couple days for my milk to come in after giving birth, but I had a huge supply when it did.

I had an 18 month old when our second was born. Just nursed them both. Colostrum came in for new baby. The oldest didn’t mind the colostrum, but I think he did drink/eat more other foods and water because of it. Our oldest only got milk after the youngest ate as much as she needed. I nursed both until they were 3.5-4 then they weened off naturally. I got my oldest a special water bottle he could carry around for the times he wanted breast milk just because he was thirsty. I just had to drink a lot of water and eat all the foods haha
