Is this normal for a 9 m old?

My 9 month old got stung by a bee this past weekend while we were camping. He got stung on the tip of his thumb and swelled all the way to his shoulder. The swelling went down in about an hr. Is that normal or is that more than normal. His father is very allergic to bees and has an epi pen for if he gets stung on the face. This is our first child and I'm wondering if he got his father's allergic reaction to bees. I'm going to talk to the doctor but his next appointment isn't till the end of the month and I'm wondering if I should talk to him sooner or what questions I should ask when I go the end of the month.
