Any advice? It’s my sons second day of Kindergarten. He’s already been through two years of PreK. I am just baffled at the audacity of this kid, hitting a dang teacher!!

Behavior is communication. There’s a reason he acted that way. I’d be asking those adults who were present what exactly they did to try to figure out that reason, help him communicate, and give him strategies to fix the issues. Is also try to talk to him and find out the reason, but he may not be able to communicate that outside of the context it was in. I’d also start working more on effectively expressing emotion and communication. We have to teach kids that stuff, they don’t come knowing it. Punishing him with a time out or loss of privilege isn’t going to do anything helpful.

I would sit down with him and have him try to communicate with you what may have upset him so badly that he started to get physical.   Young kids are still learning how to handle their emotions and sometimes don't know how to express them in an appropriate way.  I wouldn't get angry or yell at him but I would give him a chance to tell you what's wrong and help him learn to express his anger in a healthier way.

I would talk to him very calmly and kindly and ask him how his day was and how he was feeling today. I would ask him why did he not want to be in class and why did he hit and kick? I would help him identify his feelings to try to understand his actions. Then I would tell him that acting that way because you are angry or frustrated is not OK. When we have those feelings, we do A, B, and C, but we do not kick or hit. Give him ways to cope with his feelings such as deep breathing or counting to 10￼. And also explain to him the importance of cooperation with the teachers. Cooperation makes things easier for everyone including him! ￼Reassure him that school will get easier if he behaves and cooperates and you know it’s just his first week of kindergarten, but you do expect him to behave at school and there will be consequences for acting that way. Let him know that he will not be able to do ___ today because of hitting and kicking at school. Then tell him you know he will do better tomorrow because you know him and he’s a kid that knows how to cooperate and behave.￼

He didn’t get tv or tablet that day. Not because of the fit but because he hit and kicked another person. He said he was frustrated bc he wants to go to school all day with sissy and see his friends. His best friend is in his class but the first three days they only do half days and his friend was going in morning and Jaxson in afternoon. Doing half days those three days was really difficult for him to understand. He had a great day Friday. We reminded him that he gets to go all day starting Monday and he’s thrilled to go. Hopefully it was an issue isolated incident!!

He doesnt get TV, or anything when he gets home and you need to tell him he needs to do as he is told and listen to his teachers and that hitting isnt ok,
