Bf and I have newborn. I don’t own the house we live in (it’s his solely). His 9 year old daughter has 2 rooms (her own room and a playroom) She only is with us every other weekend. There is a spare bedroom that was his moms but she has moved out of state (I don’t foresee her moving back in). He wants the kids to share a room once we transition our kid out of our room.
I refuse to allow that. My argument is to use the spare bedroom and move his moms furniture to the playroom downstairs, which would eliminate the playroom.
I was getting a lot of pushback/excuses from him. He finally agreed but now I’m feeling guilty.
Am I in the wrong? Wwyd?

I’m generally very pro room sharing for siblings but that’s such a big gap and his daughter will be reaching puberty soon, I don’t think even I’d be pushing for them to share a room. It sounds like you have the space and he just doesn’t want to do the work to move his mom’s stuff.

there’s literally no reason for your baby to not have it’s own room. your step daughter has TWO rooms when she’s only there every other weekend snd your MIL has a bedroom when she lives states away?! hellll no. either get rid of the play room, or get rid of your MIL room. the best solution would be keep the play room for both kids, and then each kid has their own room. maybe if the play room is big enough put a futon couch in there for when(if) your MIL comes to visit.

I think the playroom is perfectly fine, to me it’s better to keep the majority of a child’s toys in a designated area away from where they sleep. I wish we could keep the playroom but we only have a 3 BR house. Your newborn can have their own room too, get rid of his mom’s shit. Is there a reason baby isn’t spending the first 6 months-1 year in your bedroom as recommended?

I wouldn't subject his pre teen to a newborn 🤣 newborns wake up all the time & just destroy rooms lol. I'm with you, I think they should have separate rooms since there's space. Also consider shipping the furniture to his mom or selling it or putting it in a storage unit. Makes no sense having his mom's stuff taking up all that space. So that way the kiddos can have their own bedrooms and a shared play room.

I would get rid of or get the mom to pick up her furniture and let the daughter keep her room, keep the playroom and use mom's room as baby's room.
But it's his choice as it's his house really. However now that you have a child together it might be ideal to discuss how to progress on to having a shared household and what's gonna happen with you guys in the future in general..

I think a 9yo and an infant sharing a room is inappropriate tbh. It may cause undue stress on the 9yo- babies wake up, cry, and generally need lots of help through the night. So I agree with you- eliminate either the guest room or playroom (maybe invest in guest bed furniture that can be put away, like a pull out couch). Best of luck

I agree. The only thing is, if you already have a playroom, you might want to keep it in tact for when your newborn gets older. Even by a few months old, you might want to use the playroom for your babys toys/extra storage. Can his Moms furniture be returned to her, put in storage, or maybe your basement/garage?

I don't get why there needs to be whole room for play but that's just me when they either a can play in their rooms or just bring toys out in living to play with and put back when done
