Is a wedding band required?

I know this is probably a case by case basis, but is a wedding band absolutely necessary when you get married or can you just have your engagement ring? I’m getting married in November and we’ve had enough expenses (not to mention the cost of my engagement ring was more than I needed) and I can’t justify my fiancé spending another $1,000 on the band. What is everyone thoughts?
