Does your 3yo tell you how old they are?

Question

My 3 year old, whom turned three at the end of June will only tell me how old she is if it’s rehearsed. For example, I ask her “how old are you?” Then I also say “say I’m 3 years old” then she said “I’m three years old” but she won’t tell me otherwise. Is this normal for a 3 year old? She knows her name when asked and if very verbal otherwise, but sometimes when I ask her questions like this she doesn’t seem to understand fully.

My son was like that at 3. Even now at 4, almost 5, he often gets his age wrong. He’ll tell people he’s anywhere from 2 to 6. 🤦‍♀️ But when I say “no, you’re 4” he’s like oh, right I knew that. 
It sort of makes sense that they have trouble with age. It’s not like they have a sense of time to know how many years it’s been since they were born, and most things they get asked a lot, like name, don’t change. 
I just practice with my son, whenever anything about age comes up I’ll ask him old he is and when his birthday is (still working on just getting the month right).

My kiddo is 4 and will show 4 fingers without faul. But she legit has to count them to k ow it is 4. When she does, she's fine; she knows the last number said is the right quantity.
