why would mature follicles fail to release egg

Question

I guess I have been told that a follicle can grow to 22-24 mm and contain an egg but then fail to "release" it. and I was wondering why this happens. or do mature follicles typically release their egg?TIA 
I am thinking of ivf but wondering why, after "stimming" and finding "matured" follicles on ultrasound, a trigger is still needed. why not let the body ovulate them and naturally fertilize them. so confusing. thanks

You can’t do IVF stims and then let your body naturally continue the process.  When doing IVF I had over 36 measurable follicles and ended up with 27 eggs retrieved.  25 of those eggs were mature, meaning in theory all 25 could have been fertilized and implanted in my body. Clearly 25 embryos could not be sustained in my body and would result in an extreme health risk and complete failure. 
The trigger is used to encourage all those eggs to mature at the same time, and allow them to all be retrieved together. In a normal month we only develop one lead follicle, (sometimes a few), and in IVF we have tricked our bodies into making as many mature follicles as possible. I’m not sure if our bodies can even make enough LH on their own to possible mature all the eggs in an IVF cycle, I’ve never asked. 
The trigger is also used for other purposes and other assisted reproductive technologies.

Some people fail to ovulate on their own as ovulation is very complex process. It not only requires LG surge but a blood flow and blood vessels competency as the vessels constrict in certain way and regions creating a very high pressure in the follicle and its liquid and this building up pressure feels like ovulation pain. Once the pressure reaches a certain level the follicle pops like a balloon and eject the egg and the liquid inside the follicle. So only collapsed follicle is left for the corpus luteum. Lh surge on itself is not garantee you will ovulate. Sometimes the body tries to ovulate multiple times. Doctors by law cannot transfer more than 3 embryos and won't trigger ovulation with 4 plus follicles as twins and triplets are very high risk pregnancies.
