Saving keepsakes? Im probably the a-hole

Mo

So let preface by saying, I’m not telling my husband to get rid of anything. Im just making a mental note for my kids, and getting opinions. Please read all.

My husband’s parents just moved back to our state and dropped 3 medium-large boxes off that are packed full of stuff from his childhood. His mom saved every. thing. I think its really sweet but just seems a bit much. Im talking hundreds and hundreds of pictures, drawings , awards, newspaper clippings, cards, and clothes like 20 baby outfits and much more.

My question is what are we supposed to do with all this stuff? It sits in boxes in our guest room. Sure we could pass to our kids but do they really need all this stuff from their Dad’s childhood on top their own keepsakes from their own childhood? Like its just a lot.

❤️I understand keeping a few baby outfits, some artwork, newspaper clips, awards etc. And its not easy letting things go. But I cant keep every single thing.

My MIL insists I keep everything for my kids too, and I save a couple things here and there. On my twin’s first birthday she insisted I keep their 1st birthday outfits and put them in a frame, when I initially rejected the idea, she went on to tell me that birthdays are a big deal in their family. They are in mine too but Im not framing their outfits. I also bought a paint marker board and wrote a cute birthday message on it for my twins birthday photoshoot. My MIL and my husband also insisted that I dont erase it and save it. So Now I have this 24in x 24in sign sitting on a shelf in their closet that says Happy First Birthday. For what though? What are they going to do with this sign when they grow up? lug it around and keep in a closet? We are supposed to carry it around for the next 15+yrs?

She gets my kids cards for every holiday, St. Patricks day, Halloween, Valentines, Christmas, and writes the dates in them so Ill save them for the kids. I honestly throw them away, I have saved a couple Christmas/Birthday cards though. If I kept every card she gives them we would have hundreds of cards by the time they were 18.
