How can I deal with discrimination as an autistic adult?

I am high functioning autistic and some people think that I am mentally retarded when I am not and they don't want to be around me. How can I deal with those people? I am just like anyone else. Why do some people think I am mentally retarded when I am not?

Because people are idiots. I would simply ignore them. They aren't worth your time and energy.

I have APD(auditory processing disorder). I've dealt with the same s***, despite graduating with a 3.9 GPA and honors. When people hear "processing disorder", they truly believe that you're a moron. I just lie and say that I have a hearing impairment because I find that people are more understanding of that. 
I don't have an answer for how to deal with it. There is always going be a stigma around disabilities. You have people who can't possibly relate and you have people who lack empathy/understanding. 
Imagine how I felt recently, when the media/critics tore John Fetterman to shreds because he developed an auditory processing disorder. I'm not even a political person, but as someone who has APD, it broke my heart.

I have this as well but I have adhd. There is a massive stigma, people don't cope well with our differences. Doesn't mean you should hide who you are. There will be people who love you just as you are, your tribe is super important.

If this is at work, you can lodge a formal complaint with HR. If is family/friends- recommend books to help them, like Neurotribes. Or try and directly telling them that ASD is a spectrum and although you have issues with XXXXX your cognitive functioning is superb. Just blind them with all the science that you know about your own diagnosis

Because ppl assume ppl with autism don't function well. I have a friend that's high functioning and she handles life very well was diagnosed til recently. Ppl can be very judgmental
