How do you know if your waters broke?

Is the only way to know by getting checked?? 
I feel like I had a small gush last night along with false labor contractions but I’m not sure. I live 45 minutes from my hospital and don’t want to drive all the way out there for nothing

I had my water puncture when I went into labor. I felt also a small gush. Thought I peed myself. Changed and then it happened a second time and then I knew my water probably broke. Probably 30 minutes later contractions started. Did it happen again or just that one time?

When mine broke it was a slow trickle of water that didn’t stop. At first it felt like a lot of discharge, then I thought I peed myself, then I had a bigger gush of water that happened at one time that I couldn’t mistake for anything else. About an hour later was when I started actually feeling my contractions.
